The Various Flavours of Windows 8

E-mail Print PDF

Microsoft announces the full selection of Windows 8 editions-- Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8 Enterprise and, perhaps most interesting of all, Windows RT (aka Windows on ARM or WOA).

Windows 8 tabletWindows 8 is the generic consumer edition, for use in 32- and 64-bit x86 machines (both PCs and tablets, Microsoft says), while Windows 8 Pro  is the enhanced enthusiast/professional/business edition.

Enterprise customers get Windows 8 Enterprise (obviously), with features such as PC management and deployment, advanced security, virtualisation and mobility scenarios.

The most interesting edition, however, remains Windows RT-- Windows ARM machines. In a drastic change, Microsoft will not be selling Windows RT separately, instead only pre-installing it in devices.

Seagate CEO on the Industry, Flash, Zettabytes

Did you know Seagate CEO Steve Luczo has a tattoo on his left ring finger? That's one fact one can learn from a recent Forbes interview, with other topics including the aftermath of the Thailand floods, flash memory and opportunities in the cloud...

Steve LuczoFollowing the Thailand floodings, Luczo says the industry is rebuilding "for the future," and predicts the market will soon reach pre-flood levels (170-180 million units monthly)-- even if Luczo insists the industry is not about units ("the obsession about units is ridiculous") but storage capacity.

Petabytes, in other words.

Commenting on the recent Western Digital purchase of Hitachi GST, Luczo says WD did it "to get the enterprise business," a segment Hitachi is strong at.

When it comes to flash memory, Luczo says it "is a complementary technology, it’s not a competitive technology," and the future will mostly lead to hybrid drives as a compromise between performance, capacity and pricing.

As European and US Blackberry sales plunge, RIM is going for other territories-- specifically MEA, as it prepares to open a flagship BlackBerry store amongst the glitzy malls of Dubai.

RIM M EastThe Dubai store will measure up to 140 square metres and will be the first of series of stores across the Middle East, Bloomberg reports. RIM is still doing good business in the M. East, and plans to open stores in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar.

Customising the M. Eastern BlackBerry stores is mobile phone distributor Axiom.

RIM is also looking at the African market-- Bloomberg says the company plans to open flagship stores in Nairobi, Kenya, Lagos and Nigeria.

According to IDC Q4 2011 BlackBerry shipments in MEA total 2.29 million, doubling from the same period in 2011. This contrast with Europe and the US, where customers are replacing BlackBerries with iPhones or Androids.

2.5-inch HDDs: The HDD Format of All-in-One Choice

E-mail Print PDF

According to IHS iSuppli the thinner, smaller 2.5-inch HDD format will soon have a market in desktops, thanks to demand from all-in-one PCs and low power consumption requirements.

The analyst predicts WW 2.5-inch HDD shipments for all-in-one PC use will reach approximately 1 million units in 2013 (accounting for 4% of the all-in-one PC market), up from "virtually zero" in 2012. Shipments will grow even further in the future, reaching 3m in 2014 and 7m (18% of the market) by 2016.

Forecast

The 3.5-inch HDD will remain the format of choice-- but will grow at a "much slower" rate than 2.5-inch HDDs during the 2011-2016 forecast period.

iSuppli predicts a number of vendors will adopt the 2.5-inch format for all-in-one PC models, including Apple, HP, Samsung, Lenovo, Asus, Vizio and Acer.

Intel Tablet Plans at IDF 2012

E-mail Print PDF

News on Intel's plans for tablets starts emerging from IDF 2012, Beijing-- including an Ultrabook-tablet hybrid design and a specification list for future Windows 8 tablets.

Cove Point tabletFirst, the Ultrabook-tablet hybrid. Named "Cove Point" (or Letexo, depending on who you ask) the design is similar to the Asus Transformer and its ilk, using both touchscreen and a keyboard.

However unlike the Transformer (which uses a clamshell design), the Cove Point display slides out of the keyboard, and has a number of folding modes depending on how the user will use the device.

The prototype seen at IDF 2012 runs the Windows 8 Consumer Preview and carries an Ivy Bridge CPU. It has a 12.5" display, x2 USB 3.0 ports and an HDMI port.

Specifications are also available for other future Windows 8 Intel tablets-- Atom Z2760 dual-core Clover Trail processor, 9 hours of battery life, 3G or 4G connections and NFC and Wifi Direct capability. Weight should be under 700 grams, while proposed thickness is under 9mm.
